Investment Discipline
Deans Knight Capital Management Ltd.’s ("Deans Knight") strategy is a unique
approach to wealth management. The firm treats each investment opportunity as
if it were a private investment with the price of the business determined by
the public market. The decision to buy or sell an investment is based on
whether or not the firm would pay the implied value (i.e. market cap or
enterprise value) for the business on that day. Deans Knight recognizes the
nature of imperfect markets, and that mispricing exists which causes the
securities of certain companies to be over- or under-valued. In return, through
decades of experience in Equity and High Yield Bond markets, its unique
investment strategy looks to exploit these inefficiencies.
The firm offers two specialized strategies: Small Cap Equity and High Yield
Bond. It has provided investors with superior long-term rates of return on
capital. This is accomplished through buying businesses that have a sustainable
competitive advantage, a proven track record, a strong balance sheet, and a
financially committed management team through equity ownership (not stock
options) in the firm.
The Firm
Deans Knight was found in 1992 and is based in Vancouver. The firm is led by
portfolio managers Wayne Deans, Doug Knight and Craig Langdon.
The firm's clients generally consist of high net worth individuals and
institutional investors.
